google reader has a nice feature to mark all posts older than x as read - good for when the numbers feel overwhelming. go to all posts and there's a button for mark as read, in the dropdown is an option for all or for older than a day, week or two weeks.

it's great for clearing out the old stuff and focusing on what;s new, relevant and important, or just what you really want to read.

reading can feel like an obligation, but even if it somehow comes up that you skipped it just pretend like it's 9th grade and you haven't read the book for english - everything references Shakespeare and the lesson is always be good, believe in yourself and don't give in to peer pressure. (bonus, the apple is always a biblical metaphor)
