Thank you for introducing me to this concept. I am helping to raise my niece and nephew. So much so, they used to call me mom by accident. Their bio mother is in a bad state and not much of a mother. I am so thankful that my family lives close. I don't think the children would be as well adjusted if they didn't have their grandparents, aunt,& uncle to help them grow and develop. I think they get something different from each family member that will enrich their lives. I didn't realize how important family helping to raise children was until these kids came along. It's nice to see that concept being recognized. Just to know that there is such a thing as alloparents helps to validate that I am more than an aunt to them.

I have! I haven't read her newest (which is supposed to be even more about human allomothers), but I actually pulled the quote direct from my dead-tree copy of Mother Nature. It's been years, but I remember adoring it, and flipping through it today I was remembering why. It's explicitly feminist, discusses biological underpinnings to many behaviors, but smashes to pieces the biology=destiny BS that defends so much misogyny, all within the context of espousing biologically appropriate parenting. It's quite brilliant, and I highly recommend it.

(Having not read it in years, I do have to give the caveat that there may be offensive statements within it, of course. Overall, I think the recommendation is sound, though.)
